Lighting Engines

Created in 2014 - paper, glue, light bulb, light socket

This project asked us to create products that modulate light.  An additional challenge was the parameter around it, placing it in a context.  In this case, the light is meant to be used for relaxing or in a relaxing setting.  The piece creates a warm light, casting shadows throughout the room.  It imitates a jar of fireflies through the effect of the light bouncing off layers of glue bubbles and scored paper.  The essence of the lamp comes from the layering, texture and interaction with light.  This effect and the glow of the light sets the tone while maintaining a pleasing aesthetic, even if the light is off.

How the lighting engine looks when it is illuminated.  The light is meant to evoke a feeling of relaxation and calm.  It mimics patterns found in nature to create a texture when light is projected through it.

This is the lighting engine shown in context.  I wanted the light to create a space for the individual to relax and conclude their day.

In addition to designing around a context, the light had to be aesthetically pleasing when it was off without being too much like a sculpture.
